Schedule of the main Events

1st to 15th of July

The Kazariyama exhibition

The Hakata-Gion-Yamakasa festival begins at the 1st of July. From the very start of the festival all 14 Kazariyama (飾り山: decoration mountain) and all 7 Kakiyama (舁き山: carrying mountain) are out on display in the center of Hakata. The so called “Quiet period” marks the begin of the Hakata-Gion-Yamakasa festival.

1st and 9th of July

The Oshioitori

All the districts of Hakata come together for the Oshioitori and head along a small path toward Hakozaki-hama. Apart from the Yamakasa management and the district, who’s turn it is to hold the festival, this is the first time the men partaking in the festival meet.

10th of July

The Nagaregaki

After the quiet period, Hakata comes into motion. Over the next few days more and more of the Kakiyama can be seen around town. Watch as the competition around the Kazariyama and their speed begins.

11th of July

The Asayama

Just 12 hours after Nagaregaki at 5:00 in the morning throughout Hakata the shouts of “Oisa” can be heard.

The Tanagaregaki

Ten hours after the Kakiyama were raced through their own district, they are now carried through the other parts of Hakata during the Tanagaregaki, which is very hard for the men who are carrying them, since they are carrying for the second time that day.

12th of July

The Oiyamanarashi

The Oiyamanaraishi is a full rehearsal of the Oiyama. The route taken is mostly the same with a few small exceptions. Here districts also compete for speed. Rivalling districts often race each other every meter of the way.

13th of July

The Shudanyamamise

The Shudanyamamise is the only event during the festival at which the Kakiyama enter a different part of Fukuoka than Hakata. At the 13th of July the Kakiyama are brought in front of the government office and put on display in a gallery in front of it.

14th of July

Second Nagaregaki

The day before the finale of the festivities the Kakiyama are once more carried through their own districts in course of another Nagaregaki.

15th of July

The Oiyama

The finale of the festivities begins at 4:59 in the morning when all seven of Fukuokas districts present their Kakiyama to the Kushida shrine. One by one they finish the ceremony and go out into the morning twilight.
