Fukuoka

City and Prefecture:
Fukuoka is the name of the city of which Hakata, the area of the festival, is a district.
Originally Fukuoka and Hakata were two cities, but as they grew together, they both came to be known as Fukuoka. Fukuokas main trainstation however is on the ground of Hakata and is called Hakata-Station.
The city Fukuoka has about 1.5 million inhabitants, of which over 0.2 million live in Hakata. Fukuoka is also the name of the Prefecture, in which the city Fukuoka lies. In Japanese these can more easyly be held apart, since the city is called “Fukuoka-shi” and the prefecture is called “Fukuoka-ken”.
