Traditional folded paper:
Paper folded into a zigzag pattern plays an important role in shintoistic belief. It is found hanging from ropes at shinto shrines, holy locations and also on the Yamakasa.
During the festival and its preparations, these papers, normally called “Shide”, are referred to as “Gohei”. Originally they were made as an offering to the gods, while over time it came to be seen as an object, that attracts gods.
