Women of Hakata:
This is a term generally used for the wifes of the participating men. It is no longer used since it is an old term, that is connected with the old belief, that the festival is only for men and not for the “unclean women”. Sadly, though the understanding of women assisting with the preparations has changed, it does not seem likely, that women will be taking a more active role in the festival anytime soon.
