Headbands of the authorities

The wound up towel as headband is a part of the traditional wear of the participants. However you will soon notice that there are several different types of headbands all with different colors, marking the wearer as having a specific role in the management of the festival.

The generic towel

This is the towel worn by participants with not special duties. It is worn by most children and alot of the other runners and carriers. The design is in contrast to the water vests design unified across all the district.

The red towel

Only people with alot of experience around the festival are granted these red towels by their district. They idicate, that the person wearing it serves an important role of the festivals organisation. The directors of the Kakiyama and the youth leaders are some of the roles that go hand in hand with the red towel status.

The blue and white towel

Not to be confused with the blue and white sharp, that is worn by the Kakiyama carriers on the far left and right of the front row, this headband is worn by the hygene officers. These work to ensure that the roads of the festival stay clean, but also assist the organisers and keep everything safe. They often also help young children that got separated from their parents.

The red and white towel

This headband also indicates the postion of an organizer however these are appointed by the “townships” (smaller divisions within a district) and either work to protect the townships intereset such as keeping its part of the course tidy or are representatives of that township.

The red, blue and white towel

These towels are reserved for important Hakata reprisentatives and the most senior of the festivals organisers. They are tasked with important desicions about the design of the Kakiyama and Kazariyama and making other important decisions concerning the festivities.

The multicoloured towel

These towels are given to senior participants of the festival, that together make up a comitte of the participants, that assist the representatives to make sure everything goes smoothly.

The blue and red dotted towel

This is a towel given to district representatives, thats task lies within a wide range of general affairs.
